goodbye July, hello Lughnasadh: bourbon cherry shortcake & jalapeΓ±o bacon cornbread

recently in the πŸŒ™ kitchen

August 1 marks the start of Lughnasadh, the traditional beginning of harvest season. A time of bounty and abundance. A time to start getting excited about efforts becoming yield.

Concepts very much on my mind these past few weeks as we spent some time visiting family in the Midwest. Look in any direction out there and it's miles upon miles of cornfields and rolling row after row of soy. The sheer volume of it is humbling, in the best of ways.

Knowing that each plant is the precious result of months, sometimes years, worth of effort. Thinking about the magical, massive amount of potential energy encased within each tiny seed that kicks it all off.

While I have never experienced capital-F Farming on such a scale, I have sown and grown a lot of food over the years. It's a beautiful, connected type of work that I miss every day.

It is also a hard, relentless type of work.

This harvest season, I'm especially grateful to those who labor this way, day in and out. Literally feeding us, so that we may channel our efforts in other directions.

For me, this season of life has been about harvesting ideas, sharing in the abundance of knowledge, and addressing hungers of the soul. Forms of work that can only be done when hungers of the body are mercifully met.

May your month be full of abundance in all it's forms!

recently in the πŸŒ™ kitchen May and June were quite a time. Between working through a flurry of migraine treatment options, then recovering from a small lumpectomy (nothing scary thankfully!), it has been a little more medical than usual around here. Acceptance of the fact that simply existing in this particular body of mine is its own part-time job (full-time? OVERTIME? πŸ˜…) hasn't always come easily to me. But I do feel like I'm getting there. In the meantime, I'm practicing giving myself two...

April's recipes in the πŸŒ™ kitchen Well, it's been a few months since I sent out this allegedly "monthly" email. A lot has happened! The site got a big upgrade (as did the extent of my technical expertise πŸ€“) and I've been learning my way around a new camera. In the midst of it all, lots of goodies have gone up recently. Indulgent Pink Peppercorn Shortbread and Carrot Cake Oatmeal Cookies, balanced by solid dinner options like Chimichurri Pork Chops and Lemon Pepper Chicken Legs. Plus, a recipe...

October recipe wrap-up I'm usually more of a savory gal, but last month I surprised myself with dreamy thoughts of baked goods. Rather than try to salad myself out of it, I leaned right into the craving for cozy autumn baking and we ended up having an October full of sweet treats--no tricks in sight! From maple-buttercream crowned Spiced Chai Cake to cinnamon-sugar dusted Applesauce Fritters and ginger laced Acorn Squash Bread to buttery Pumpkin Brioche Bread Pudding, last month was packed...
