joyful recipes in june--a midsummer cocktail, bistro-style steak salad, & strawberry swirl cheesecake cookies

recently in the πŸŒ™ kitchen

May and June were quite a time. Between working through a flurry of migraine treatment options, then recovering from a small lumpectomy (nothing scary thankfully!), it has been a little more medical than usual around here.

Acceptance of the fact that simply existing in this particular body of mine is its own part-time job (full-time? OVERTIME? πŸ˜…) hasn't always come easily to me. But I do feel like I'm getting there.

In the meantime, I'm practicing giving myself two things that I sense many of us could use a bit more of: grace when it comes to managing all the things, and permission to end each day knowing that enough, truly is, enough.

With that spaciousness comes more room for everyday celebrations, joyful indulgences (see cookie recipe below!), and connective moments.

I celebrated summer with a juicy Solstice Berry Moscow Mule, using it as the perfect opportunity to experiment with direct sunlight photography for the first time!

We heartily enjoyed this Arugula Steak Salad with Shallot Lemon Vinaigrette as a random Tuesday lunch, leaving feeling like we had teleported to a streetside cafe for the afternoon.

And these Strawberry Swirl Cheesecake Cookies have lived in my imagination for a while, so it was entirely gratifying to bring them into the tangible realm.

I hope your month is filled with grace, joy, and all the good food.

solstice berry Moscow mule

Sun-soaked summer berries, bright lemon, and bracing ginger beer come together in this juicy explosion of midsummer energy. Sweet, crisp, and completely refreshing.

arugula steak salad

A celebration of contrasts: warm seared steak, cool arugula, silky shallot vinaigrette and crunchy parmesan crisps. A restaurant-worthy recipe, simplified for at home.

shallot-lemon vinaigrette

A robust blend of juicy lemon, briny capers, and punchy shallots, balanced by the subtle sweetness of dried chervil and grounded with spicy Dijon.

strawberry swirl cheesecake cookies

Chewy graham cracker cookies filled with a silky cream cheese filling and ethereal swirls of vibrant fresh strawberry sauce.

A summertime classic in handheld form!

hoping this month's recipes nourish you -- body, mind, and soul -- no matter which of life's phases you currently find yourself in.

recently in the πŸŒ™ kitchen August 1 marks the start of Lughnasadh, the traditional beginning of harvest season. A time of bounty and abundance. A time to start getting excited about efforts becoming yield. Concepts very much on my mind these past few weeks as we spent some time visiting family in the Midwest. Look in any direction out there and it's miles upon miles of cornfields and rolling row after row of soy. The sheer volume of it is humbling, in the best of ways. Knowing that each plant...

April's recipes in the πŸŒ™ kitchen Well, it's been a few months since I sent out this allegedly "monthly" email. A lot has happened! The site got a big upgrade (as did the extent of my technical expertise πŸ€“) and I've been learning my way around a new camera. In the midst of it all, lots of goodies have gone up recently. Indulgent Pink Peppercorn Shortbread and Carrot Cake Oatmeal Cookies, balanced by solid dinner options like Chimichurri Pork Chops and Lemon Pepper Chicken Legs. Plus, a recipe...

October recipe wrap-up I'm usually more of a savory gal, but last month I surprised myself with dreamy thoughts of baked goods. Rather than try to salad myself out of it, I leaned right into the craving for cozy autumn baking and we ended up having an October full of sweet treats--no tricks in sight! From maple-buttercream crowned Spiced Chai Cake to cinnamon-sugar dusted Applesauce Fritters and ginger laced Acorn Squash Bread to buttery Pumpkin Brioche Bread Pudding, last month was packed...
